SOUTH Elmsall's Kelly Fisher won the WPBA (Women's Professional Billiards Association) United States Open 9 ball Pool Championships in impressive style on Sunday to confirm her ranking as the new world number one.
While she didn’t need to win the championship, having accumulated enough points through the earlier tournaments to displace Karen Corr from top spot, Kelly, 29, demolished Iris Ranola 7-1 in the final of the tournament, held at Riverwind Casino in Norman, Oklahoma.

Pouncing after Iris missed the 7 ball in the first frame, Kelly cleared up and went on to rack up four more frames before her opponent managed a consolation one, only to be confined to her chair as Kelly acquired the remaining two frames to triumph and bag her first US Open title.

Fisher swept by Amanda Lampart, Kim White and Jasmin Ouschan in the early rounds before demolishing Julie Kelly 9-1 in the quarter-final.

Her quarter-final and semi-final clashes proved to be tougher, beating Vivian Villarreal 7-6 in the quarters before beating Jeanette Lee 7-5 in the semi-final.

The only daughter of Don Fisher and the late Stella Fisher, of Cambridge Street, South Elmsall, Kelly is the six times Women’s World Snooker Champion, having lifted the title on the last occasion that it was staged at The Crucible, Sheffield, along with being European Champion on seven different occasions.

She moved across the Atlantic in 2005, and had to play a series of qualifying tournaments before being accepted on the WPBA circuit, which has a series of major classics all over the United States.

Kelly made her debut in the Canadian Classic, and her first victory was in the San Diego Classic in 2006, which she retained the following year, and which provided her with her most thrilling moment until Sunday’s success.

Her dad, Don, heard of her victory from his daughter’s own lips on Monday, and said it was a magnificent achievement to obtain world number one ranking in both snooker and pool.

“It emphasises the grit and determination Kelly possesses, along with a great deal of talent,” he said.

“She lost her mum, Stella, just over a year ago, which really knocked her back, but she has come back fighting and will dedicate this latest success to the memory of her mother.”
