Double strike gives Blues win
Frickley Athletic 2
Scarborough 0
A DOUBLE strike just after the interval ensured Frickley tasted their first success of their pre-season in a lively friendly encounter with Scarborough at South Elmsall at the weekend.
Manager Billy Heath again rang the changes with the Blues and must have been pleased with the defence, which managed to keep the lid on a lively Northern Counties East attack.
He started with Jon Hood, Chris Hilton, Steve Robinson, Jason Blunt, Steve Heath, Dean Jones, Lee Morris, Danny Walsh, Rob Pell, Chris Davies and Chris White.
And in the third minute, Chris White drilled a 25-yard free-kick across the face of goal, only for the visitors to respond with Scott Phillips having a shot diverted behind five minutes later and Craig Hogg blazed over with only Hood to beat.
Former Blues player Richard Medcalf had a couple of efforts blocked on the line on the half-hour, and Hood made a fine save at the far post to foil another ex-Frickley forward, Ryan Morton, after he had whipped in a deep cross in the 38th minute.
The second half saw Adam Nicklin, Shaun Pierrepont, Phil Lindley, Antony Jackson, Jacob White, Dean Wilburn and Jonathan Groome come on for the home side.
White, after having his corner-kick half cleared in the 49th minute, lashed the rebound across the face of goal and a whisker wide of the far post.
And Scarborough were pierced by a brace of direct attacks, Towler providing a pinpoint cross for Lee Morris to knock in at the far post in the 52nd minute.
Before the visitors could recover, Wilburn had raced onto a through ball and slotted his shot under the advancing Dave Bramley.
A 40-yard free-kick from Morton zipped over the bar in the 70th minute as the visitors tried hard to reduce the arrears, while two curling corners from Morton two minutes later were cleared from under the bar by powerful headers from Groome and Heath.
In the last minute, Chris White burst down the left and weaved past two defenders before striking an angled cross which Wilburn managed to get a boot to, but the ball went into the side netting.
This Saturday, Frickley entertain Selby Town in a friendly, kick-off 3pm, and travel to Brigg Town next Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm.
