AN apprentice joiner from Hemsworth has won the Yorkshire region's skillbuild competition.
Steven Oldroyd, who works for Wakefield Council, competed against 32 other joiners to complete a set task within six hours.

Steven, 19, of Barnsley Road, has just completed his third year of an apprenticeship and will compete in the skillbuild national final later this year.

He said: “I never thought about winning. I simply took my time and consequently felt quite relaxed.

“I was surprised and delighted to win and I’m now looking forward to the national competition.”

Jo Clancy, his college tutor at Leeds College of Building, said his confidence had increased during his course.

Mr Clancy said: “He seems to excel at everything we give him to complete.”

Skillbuild competitions are open to young people working and training within the construction industry.

Coun Graham Stokes, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for corporate services, said: “We are dedicated to boosting skills in the district and are proud that so many of our apprentices receive regional and national accolades.

“The apprentice scheme enables us to provide the opportunity for young people to experience working within a professional environment and gain experience.

“We are extremely proud Steven was nominated and worked hard to beat the competition. We wish him the best of luck at the national finals later this year.”
