THESE detailed stone carvings have been creating confusion in the Hemsworth and South Elmsall Express area.
The faces were spotted by Alan Bramley, of Willow Drive, Hemsworth, carved onto railway bridges between Moorthorpe and Hemsworth.

He found four at Mutton Fields and about 10 others were at Royd Moor, where the Moorthorpe line still crosses.

The faces are similar to ones on sculptures that were left outside homes across the north of England in October 2007. It was eventually revealed they were the work of South Elmsall artist Billy Johnson.

The Express was unable to get in touch with Mr Johnson to ask if he is responsible for the new carvings.

Mr Bramley said: “I don’t know who carved these faces but whoever it was, they must have spent hours doing it. I don’t know how long they have been there – they might have been there years.

“I just spotted them when I was walking past. There were about 15 of them carved into the railway bridge. I took some pictures because it would be nice to know who did them.”
