A CHINESE takeaway is the first business in South Elmsall to be given five stars in a food hygiene award scheme.
South Pacific, on Barnsley Road, received the accolade from Wakefield Council’s Scores on the Doors scheme.

The initiative makes sure that businesses handling food comply with hygiene regulations.

Danny Cheung, 28, who runs the shop with his brother, Ray, said: “It is quite a big thing to get five stars in the Scores on the Doors scheme and we were really pleased when we found out.”

Ray, 32, said: “We were awarded five stars because of our food hygiene – the inspector looked at our fridge temperatures, our food preparation methods, surface cleanliness and our records of food temperatures.

“We were very pleased to get full marks, especially since we are the first in South Elmsall. We have framed our certificate and put it on a shelf so customers can see it.”

Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for environment, Coun Clive Hudson, said: “South Pacific, by achieving a five-star rating, has shown it has an excellent level of compliance with food hygiene standards and the council’s environmental health officers have confidence in its management. It is hoped the rating will encourage other food businesses in the area to improve their standards.”
