A GROUP of travellers who have set up camp on land next to Fitzwilliam Country Park are facing eviction.
And people living nearby are getting increasingly worried about what debris could be left behind.

Taxpayers were stung with a £10,000 clean-up bill when travellers left the same site 12 months ago. They left human excrement, clothes, bottles and burned rubbish.

Peter Taberner, 40, of Holgate View, said: “I saw five caravans on the site and they have brought dogs with them. They are intimidating – I try to avoid the area and my little boy’s too scared to go up there.

“Volunteers have worked hard to clear up mess that travellers have left in the past but they still return.

“There should be a gate to keep them out.”

Hemsworth town councillor Ann Westmorland said: “I’m worried they will move onto the country park. They were there twice last year and left lots of rubbish behind. It stops people using the park.”

The travellers arrived at the site about 10 days ago and Wakefield Council confirmed they were due to be evicted on Monday.

A Wakefield Council spokesman said: “They are on private land so we have had no involvement in legal proceedings, but we have been liaising with police and the primary care trust to keep an eye on other social, health and welfare needs.”

Insp Dave Westwood, of South Kirkby neighbourhood police team, said his team was monitoring the travellers.

He said: “We expect them to move on shortly. Because the land is privately owned it is up to the landowner to take action but we will become involved if there are any disturbances.”
