A SOUTH Kirkby football team has been crowned champion of a major American youth tournament.
South Kirkby Colliery U13s is the first English team to win the Disney Cup International Youth Soccer Tournament, which took place in Florida.

The boys won the trophy after snatching a last minute goal to win 4-3 against Bayside Premier, which is the number-one football team in New York and ranked 107th in the whole of the US.

The team, which spent almost two years raising £18,000 for the trip, also beat the Futstars team, from Brazil, and the Australian Soccer School team to reach the final. They had previously been beaten by Bayside in the group stages, where they also lost to Wizla Krakow, a Polish side which will play in this year’s Champions’ League.

Coach Phil Winter said: “We are the only English team to win this trophy, which is just fantastic.

“Even the Chelsea Academy lost in the final last year!”
