Ryhill-based family group try something that little bit different

Ryhill-based family group The Hit Men and Her are set to try something a little different with their already successful clubland show.
The band, which features brothers David and John Hemingway and John's wife Sharon, are branching out into the world of classic ballads and band member David Hemingway, who I spoke to last week, seems to think that this new musical development will add to the band's guitar and keyboard-based appeal.
I shall definitely have to go out and catch The Hit Men and Her in action when the new set in ready for blast off.
Hemsworth Miners Social Club concert secretary Keith McIntyre was celebrating last Sunday evening after returning from the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff where he saw his beloved Barnsley FC gain promotion to the Championship. Keith let his hair down, along with all the other Fitzwilliam-based footy fans, to the music of 70's Express, a costumed and choreographed tribute to a decade from the members of hit club band Pure Fantasy.
The club was packed to the doors and I'm sure that Keith wasn't the only football fan in Fitzwilliam celebrating the promotion party.
Nottingham-based band The New Shakir will be the star attraction when they make a Sunday night appearance at this busy venue. I caught this act in action last year quite by chance during a visit to the Lincolnshire resort of Skegness. The band was playing at a seafront pub venue and I was very impressed with their choice of soft rock and commercial rock covers. Later this month bands like The Ant Hill Mob and Aphrodite will also be appearing at Hemsworth Miners Social Club.
The Wakefield and Pontefract Concert Secretaries' Federation held its annual newcomers clubland awards show last week over at Sharlston Common wmc.
The show was presented by Jonathan Carroll and featured up-and-coming new clubland acts like Clare Matthews and Marc Gunyal, as well as new duo ESP and three-piece band Ladiva. I'm sure that all the readers from this area would like to offer their congratulations to this array of rising stars.
The next federation showcase evening will be held over in the Wakefield area at Westgate Common Club on Thursday, June 22.
Clubland star and voice teacher Tony Wayne, who runs classes in Hemsworth and Castleford for aspiring young singers, is to present a showcase of his aspiring new stars next week.
Quite a number of his pupils hail from this neck the woods and Tony has kindly invited me to go along and see this event.
Likewise Sharlston-based voice teacher Shelley Stevens is holding an event in the near future to showcase her talented pupils. Shelley is currently teaching the likes of promising clubland singer Christina Myers, so she obviously knows what she is doing!
I shall include details of both Tony and Shelley's showcase events in a future column.
