Following in her father's footsteps

Hemsworth West End Club is not a venue which I hear a great deal from, but I think I can confidently predict a top night's entertainment at the club this weekend when the very talented Shirley Ann Scott will be the star attraction on Sunday evening.

Shirley is the talented daughter of that clubland star of yesteryear, Peregrine Curruthers.
I believe Shirley's dad was the first artiste I ever saw perform at the old Ryhill and Havercroft social club when I became a member in 1977.
The club, which was known locally as 'The Legion', was my dad's local and it used to be a sort of rite of passage to become a member of your dad's club.
The concert chairman was a man called George Anglesey and he was a real old fashioned concert chairman.
I wish there were more club chairman like Mr Anglesey these days!
Shirley is clearly a chip off the old block and her dad comes around to many of her shows to see her in action. Perhaps he may be with her when she entertains at the West End.
A few weeks ago I mentioned the Rovers Return pub venue in Fitzwilliam.
It seems that this lively pub is presenting many clubland stars on their Friday shownights and the very funny Trisha Bright and the highly entertaining Johnnie Martell are just two of the forthcoming attractions.
Why not pop in and check the place out if you fancy a spot of good quality entertainment?
The gorgeous Gabriella Clark and her band Goodison Avenue are the star attraction at Hemsworth Miners Welfare Club in Fitzwilliam this weekend when they appear on Sunday evening.
I'm willing to bet that the red-blooded men of 'Fitzy' will be well pleased by this particular attraction!
There's a bit of comedy to enjoy at Ryhill Liberal Club this coming weekend as that seasoned entertainer Clinton Foggart makes the trip down from the Northeast to see us.
Clinton has been a regular visitor to our area for many a year now and he is always a welcome sight on any stage.
Friday night is the night to catch Clinton at 'The Lib' and I see that the superb Rob Linacre will be on stage at the club on February 24, so this really is a case of two top nights to enjoy here.
Castleford entertainer Jonathan Carroll is busy taking in contestants for his Wakefield Starsearch talent competition, which begins next month on Wednesday evenings at Westgate Common Club in Wakefield.
There is a lot of prize money up for grabs, in fact the winner will pick up £2,000 and I shall be going along to help with the judging on the grand final night in July, so there will be a full report in the local press on this high profile event.
Anyone interested in finding out more should give Jonathan a call on 07751 248093.
Just a reminder that Hemsworth-based club star Kevin Kane is to present the next concert secretaries federation showcase, which is being staged at Lofthouse Gate Club, near Wakefield, on February 22.
I hear that poor old Kevin has been a bit under the weather lately with a dose of the 'dreaded lurgy' to contend with.
Hopefully on February 22 he will have put away the Night Nurse and be back behind the microphone.
