Clubland Scene - August 22
This week I have news of a concert, which has been arranged to recognise the achievements in clubland of Pontefract man Jim Tomlin.
Wakefield and Pontefract Concert Secretaries Federation official John Walsh is the man behind the concert and Prince of Wales wmc, where Jim used to be concert secretary many years ago, is the club where the show will be staged.
John has approached me to compere the show. The date for your diary is Tuesday, November 11.
I'm told by John that he is putting the show together and I was pleased to be invited to present it as Prince of Wales wmc was the club where the federation re-formed back in the late 80s.
I was at the first ever meeting of the federation and helped spread the word regarding the plans of the organisation.
On that night, Jim Tomlin chaired the meeting and was involved in the federation as president up until very recently, when ill health prevented his further involvement.
Jim's wife, Marion, has been made aware of the show, which John Walsh tells me will feature many of the stars of clubland.
I will include more on this show in a future issue.
In the meantime, the September meeting and showcase for the Wakefield and Pontefract Federation will be staged at The New Brookhouse Club in Wakefield on Tuesday, September 23.
It's a big bank holiday weekend for our clubs and let's hope that we get a bit of nice sunny, warm weather to go with it.
Megan Jarvis from B&S Club in Featherstone rang to let me know that their bank holiday weekend starts on Friday night with a visit from the impressive boy girl act White Lies.
Along with I suspect a number of other clubs, the B&S is also advertising a fun day for Bank Holiday Monday for all the family.
There will be an inflatable, a rodeo bull, a disco and karaoke, and much more.
Many moons ago most clubs did something for the kids on bank holidays and it's nice to see the B&S doing something for all the family. Let's hope the suns shines!
Lovely and talented Knottingley girl singer Christina Myers has a Sunday night show in her own backyard at Kellingley Social Centre.
Christina is a real smasher and well worth listening to any day of the week.
It's comedy time at Featherstone wmc on Bank Holiday Monday as Wakefield twin boy act Sharpe Experience will be providing the laughs. These guys have been working hard on their act and deserve some success given all their dedication to the tricky world of comedy.
The Peter Kay tribute night featuring Lee Lard is coming up on Friday, August 29. Support act is the glam rock band The Glamned and tickets are on sale at the club priced at just £10, which can't be bad.
With Ricky Graham, Jimmy Echo and Carl Ashington all coming up over the next couple of weeks at Willow Park Club, I would say that this venue really does deserve a visit.
Willow Park really is a grand club and you can find it leaving Ponterfract towards the Chequerfield area on Baghill Lane.
